Mission: YouthBuild's mission is to unleash the intelligence, positive energy and skill sets of low-income young people to rebuild their communities and their lives. We seek to join with others to help build a movement toward a more just society in which respect, love, responsibility, and cooperation are the dominant unifying values, and a reasonable distribution of resources provides sufficient opportunities for all people in all communities to fulfill their own potential and contribute to the wellbeing of others.. Overview: YouthBuild is a forty-year-old program and model that enables economically-disadvantaged young people, who are not in school or working, to reclaim their education, gain the skills they need for employment, and become leaders in their own communities. Through its comprehensive model that combines education, life skills development, career pathways, and service, YouthBuild unleashes the intelligence and positive energy of young people, empowering them to become leaders, rebuild their communities and their lives, and break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families. There are 260 YouthBuild programs serving more than 7,000 students annually throughout the United States. YouthBuild programs are locally-sponsored, and form an affiliated network that is guided and supported - but not directly managed - by YouthBuild USA. YouthBuild programs can be stand-alone nonprofits, comprehensive agencies (such as YMCAs), faith-based organizations, charter schools, and other community-based institutions. In addition, YouthBuild International, through its country affiliates, serves approximately 7,000 additional young people in 23 countries. A recent randomized control trial involving 75 YouthBuild programs found that, compared to comparable programs, YouthBuild increased receipt of a high school equivalency credential, college enrollment, and civic engagement of participants.. YouthBuild USA. In 1990, YouthBuild USA was established as the headquarters and technical assistance and support center for YouthBuild programs throughout the U.S. Since then, YouthBuild USA has supported the national network of local YouthBuild programs, which more recently has expanded globally. YouthBuild USA provides training and technical assistance, leadership development, pass-through grants, quality assurance and advocacy for YouthBuild programs. YouthBuild USA works closely with the US Department of Labor and advocates on behalf of YouthBuild programs and students to sustain and expand the Federal YouthBuild program. YouthBuild USA holds YouthBuild programs accountable to high standards of student achievement through the YouthBuild Affiliated Network, collecting data from members and evaluating program performance to inform the work to sustain, improve, strengthen, and ultimately expand YouthBuild.. YouthBuild USA has approximately 80 employees, and an annual budget of $25 million, of which about $10 million represents pass-through funding to YouthBuild programs. John Valverde joined YouthBuild USA as CEO in 2017, succeeding Dorothy Stoneman, who had led the organization since its founding. The organization is in the process of completing a strategic plan that will help guide its activities and priorities for the next five years. The COO will play a lead role in gathering input and feedback on the strategic plan from YouthBuild programs before finalizing it, and will serve as the lead steward and champion for the strategic plan within YouthBuild USA, leading its implementation, and ensuring that it connects strongly to the organization's operating priorities and goals.. YouthBuild USA is in an exciting transition period. The organization successfully navigated a recent financial challenge and is once again financially-stable. The Chief Operating Officer will have a new strategic plan to work with, along with a new financial management system and new employee evaluation and goal-setting tool to drive and manage culture and performance. Through the strategic planning process, YouthBuild USA has identified strategies that the organization can undertake to build on its many strengths to better support YouthBuild programs to deepen impact on young people, and to strengthen the culture of collaboration and accountability within YouthBuild USA.
