The Systems Design and Architecture organization is searching for a candidate with a passion for Autonomous Systems to design, develop, and field, open, trusted, secure, certified, and operationally effective collaborative autonomous solutions. This position is onsite in Tucson, AZ.

The successful candidate will have hands on experience with multiple Fixed Wing UAS developments and be comfortable working in a fast development environment where CONOPS and requirements are loosely defined and actively refined.  The Principal Systems Engineer will collaborate across Engineering Disciplines to rapidly develop and demonstrate UAS system functionality.  They will work to define key system concepts, capabilities, and limitations, CONOPS and architecture, requirements capture and management through the development, prototyping, testing, verification, and flight demonstration phases of UAS related systems which include autonomous systems and behaviors, advanced communications, vehicle navigation and control, and other advanced system technologies.  This position may require up to 25% travel.

What You Will Do

  • You will apply extensive experience in Fixed Wing UAS system design in a rapid development and demonstration environment.

  • Develop, define, capture, maintain, and communicate system behaviors, structures, timelines, states, and configurations. Collaborate across engineering and with technical leadership on system architecture and design.

  • Logically and systematically convert customer requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.

  • Identify, conduct, and oversee various system analyses to reduce risk, establish requirements, inform design decisions, perform design trades, and troubleshoot issues.

  • Regularly present status and analyses to various internal and external stakeholders including technical leadership, program management, and customers.

  • Identify, characterize, and communicate technical risks and help plan risk mitigation activities. Organize and maintain the technical documentation package including designs, drawings, specifications, simulations, analyses, CAD databases, source code, executables, test plans, issue reports, etc.

  • Participate in failure investigations and reviews. You will also influence the architecture of the system, establishing processes, and align RMD program leadership, office the of chief engineer, and multiple IPTs.

Qualifications You Must Have  

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in STEM and 8 (eight) years of systems engineering experience OR an Advanced degree and 5 (five) years of systems engineering experience is required

  • Experience working with cross-disciplined teams.

  • Prior experience with one of the following:

    • Fixed Wing UAS-Unmanned Aircraft Systems trade studies

    • UAS system development and design

    • UAS systems requirements development and management

    • UAS system integration and test

  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Domain and/or background knowledge in one or more of the following areas related to Fixed Wing UAS system design.  These include: UAS Command and Control Systems, Airframes/Structures/Thermodynamics, Electronics, Communications, and Power, Autonomous Systems and Algorithms, Flight Management Systems, Surveillance sensors and algorithms, Human / machine interface, Information Assurance and Cyber Threat Considerations

  • Experience piloting Fixed Wing UASs

  • Experience integrating, demonstrating, and deploying complex Systems comprised of embedded SW/HW

  • Experience in Digital Engineering or Model Based Systems Engineering

  • In depth knowledge of US Army military operations and doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, and facilities (DOTMLPF)

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
